about

I think of this as a straight-ahead gospel song, explicit if perhaps in a sideways way in its expression of faith, though I'm not sure the guy in the song sets foot too often in church. I was listening to a lot of Todd Snider, and I've always admired the way his lines are never as simple as they seem. I improvised this into the voice memos app on my phone one afternoon when I was working at home. Keith Richards recommends doing that: if you get an idea, start recording and just keep going, making yourself improvise lines because sometimes you'll get someplace deep or at least unexpected. There were 12 or 15 verses and a rudimentary stab at a chorus, which I whittled down until I had the keeper verses. I loved cutting this at a brisk, punchy tempo. Hannah added several different takes, any one of which could have been a keeper, but the next to last was my favorite. It brings me a lot of joy to listen to the way this all comes together.

lyrics

Always want to be better than myself
May the good lord rescue me
Always want to be better then myself
May the good lord rescue me
Always want to be better than myself
I give away pieces like I'm somebody else
Rescue me
Rescue me

I never thought I'd get out of New Orleans
May the good lord rescue me
I never thought I'd get out of New Orleans
May the good lord rescue me
I never thought I'd get out of New Orleans
With my cap on my head and my legs in my jeans
Rescue me
Rescue me

Took so much for granted
Took my sweet time
I was always in a rush to get there
Now I find
I've changed my mind
And I'm always already there

Standing here singing in my shorts and socks
May the good lord rescue me
Standing here singing in my shorts and socks
May the good lord rescue me
Standing here singing in my shorts and socks
I'm wearing what I've got and what I've got's not a lot
Rescue me
Rescue me

Took so much for granted
Took my sweet time
I was always in a rush to get there
Now I find
I've changed my mind
And I'm always already there

Never thought I'd stand up and testify
May the good lord rescue me
Never thought I'd stand up and testify
May the good lord rescue me
Never thought I'd stand up and testify
Pluck that mean old mote right out of my eye
Rescue me
Rescue me
Rescue me
